Newcastle United’s managing director Lee Charnley has officially opened negotiations with Andrea Berta of Atletico Madrid for the possibility of bringing the talented winger Gelson Martins to the North East. It is understood that AS Monaco are also interested in Gelson Martins.
The deal offered by Lee Charnley is reported to be a loan offer till the end of the season but is no set in stone as Atlético Madrid would rather come to an agreement with a buyer that see’s Gelson move to that club permanently by agreeing on a price set by Atleti.
Atlético are asking for a payment of €4.5m which is a high amount for a loan duration of four months. The matter of question isn’t is if Lee Charnley has the money but whether Lee Charnley wants to invest that much out of what is already a very limited budget on a winger that has struggled for play time this season.
Should the negotiations go in our favour over Monaco’s, then the deal should be finalized this weekend, Gelson Martins could be featuring for Newcastle as early as the 2nd February against Spurs.
Atléti are clearly looking for a way out for Gelson by adding a buyout clause at the end of the loan spell for whichever club he decides to go to. But the deal will be decided by which club official would commit to the buyout clause at the end of the loan deal.
